Background

Commkit is a software tool, when used in conjunction with Introduction to Data Communications: A Practical Approach (written by Larry Hughes), introduces many aspects of data communications, including:

Commkit is written in C, executing on PCs running MS-DOS. Commkit has a layered structure, meaning that different higher-level modules all use the same underlying software, as the following illustration shows:

Foreground process
Background processes (optional)
Network emulators (optional)
Commkit (interrupt handlers and message software)
Hardware

All communications take place across the PC's serial port connections (Comm ports 1 and 2).

Commkit is used by a number of colleges and universities around the world.
